What's in a name? A lot if you pay attention and ask. Biz means business of course, and de Jesús literally means "of or belonging to Jesus" in Spanish, French and Portuguese. Our de Jesús family is a Puerto Rican branch of a Spanish Sephardic Jewish lineage dispersed throughout France, Portugal, Spain and their respective colonies in Africa, the Americas and around the world as far as the Philippines. Ironically, our ancestors were almost exterminated in the very name of Jesus our family is named for. The de Jesús family surname was assumed as a last name by newly converted Sephardic Jews to publicly profess their new Christian faith during the Roman Catholic Inquisition in Europe back in the dark Middle Ages. So from experience our family understands the power of the word in our own last name and survival.

Often called "New Christians," Jewish converts included many who became devout, believing Catholics, or at any rate educated their children to be. Some conversos even became saints like Santa Teresa de Jesús (the great mystic writer and patron saint of Spanish writers), and priests like Antonio de Jesús who helped her found the reformed Carmelite Convents and monasteries. For many this was the only way to escape death and persecution, which culminated in 1492 when King Fernando and Queen Isabela decreed the expulsion of all Jews from Spain, and later Portugal.

Many Jews converted or left the Iberian peninsula. By 1493 the newly discovered Americas allowed many to survive by emigrating and assimilating with the European colonists, Native American Indians and African slaves as travelling entreprenuers. Others, however, changed their names yet preserved Jewish practices and did their utmost to retain some sort of Jewish identity. Our de Jesús family from the beautiful island of Puerto Rico embraced its European, Native American, African and Hebrew heritage into a new Latin American identity.

This diversity and history of surviving adversity, along with our Latin and Judeo-Christian values, are our sources of faith, compassion and strength. Our mixed ancestry and quest for liberty and justice is what connects us to the rest of the world rather than separate us. It is in honor of our ancestors' perseverance, entreprenurial spirit and belief in the power of human faith, freedom and goodwill that we now live and do business in America. Our knowledge and expertise as bilingual bicultural Latinos make us an asset to America, as at more than 36 million, Latinos are now considered the largest minority group in the U.S. and the dominant ethnic group in states like California, Florida, New York and Texas.

We operate under Jesus Christ's simple Golden Rule to do to others as we want others to do to us. This basic moral principle is true in life and in business, as our business practices are an extension of our spiritual practices.
